L E T ' S C E L E B R A T E >>> It's International Women's Day

H A P P Y   I N T E R N A T I O N A L   W  M E N ' S   D A Y !!!
To celebrate all the lovely ladies around the globe and feature some of our favoritewomen-run businesses and artisans, Bea's written a blog post. Here's a snippet:

"According to Globalcitizen.org, 'Women work two-thirds of the world's working hours, produce half of the world's food, but earn only 10% of the world's income and own less than one perent of the world's property.' They make up 70% of the world's one billion poorest....This is why Nectar dedicates so much of its offerings to women-owned businesses and Fair Trade women's cooperatives....These cooperatives are support centers; they foster sisterhood and community. Nectar has the luxury of being a part of that community. We boast insanely beautiful handiwork from women around the world, and the best part is that we get to share their stories. We're suckers for a good narrative. When a customer oggles a Raven & Lily necklace, we can tell the tale of how it was hand crafted by HIV positive women in Ethiopia from melted bullet casings, and how this cooperative empowers these women with sustainable employment, medical support, and educational opportunities for their families."

"MAKE IT HAPPEN."

International Women's Day is a celebration... of WOMEN'SACHIEVEMENTS and a call forgreater equality in all things. The 2015 slogan is "Make it Happen."
Here at Nectar, our amazing staff of Nectarettes is almost all women-and we are most definitely always making it happen. Between nine women, we run the shop, handle the online orders, unpack and and repack items, and monitor inventory. And we do it all with love! Since founding the business in 2005, Jenny Wonderling has worked hard to make conscientious decisions about our suppliers, preferring companies which have eco-minded and Fair Trade practices without compromising quality or aesthetics. In honor of International Women's Day, we are proud to bring attention to the beautiful work of many women's cooperatives from around the world. Check out our sitefor spotlights on some of our favorite companies, upcoming inspiring interviews with their owners, and more!
(Meanwhile, we'd also like to express deep gratitude to Avery, our honorary Nectarine/sometimes furniture mover and repairman extraordinaire, and the team of men including Jenny's grown sons, Aidan and Emmanuel, who sporadically help unload our newest shipments of items from their containers. But then, it's hard to stop there... there are the artisans and woodworkers, male and female, near and far whose beautiful workmanship can be seen at Nectar as well... For what is the celebration of one without the recognition, too, of the other?)

YOUR WORLD NEIGHBORS

Ms. Bea Rue and I went to the NY International Gift Show in August, and fell in love with so many new products and companies from near and far.  The bulk of what we purchased was handmade, Fair Trade, and eco-conscious, and so incredibly beautiful or fun! New gifts have been arriving weekly from our splurge & will be through the holidays to keep Nectar fresh with new accents of color & inspiration, while supporting our World Neighbors. We are especially excited when the items we are passionate about happen to be bringing wonderful things to the world in which the artisans themselves also live...

Musical instruments from Central America, booties and rugs from Nepal, new sultry locally made soy candles and tabletop items, beyond gorgeous scarves and sterling jewelry from a women's cooperative in Morocco (Bea and I will both be donning those asap!), incredible ornaments from India, lighting, and so much more... You will just have to come in and see for yourselves!

julian schreibman
YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

"Never Doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed  people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead

I have to admit I was a little nervous to attach my name to a political event. Gathered intimately with 20 or so people on a neighbor's screened-in  porch, I thought, how is such a small group going to make a difference?  And can I be sure that this man, a politician after all, would have our collective best interest in mind? But then he began... And because I was literally feet from Julian Schreibman, I could look him in his eyes, and watch how rather than dodge direct and difficult questions with evasive answers he was authentic, humble, and very passionate about many of the same things I care about: protecting women's reproductive rights and our environment; land conservation, family farms and sustainable agriculture; promoting jobs in the area through small business incentives; furthering alternative green energies; saving Medicare and the Department of Education. He's also flagrantly against Fracking and the creation of a new nuclear power plant proposed by local republicans. All of these issues seem like no-brainers to me, but his opponent Chris Gibson carries his Tea Party values in his knickers, and would like a very different world than I do. The truth is, we have only look at the Gibson record from the past two years - it is beholden to the billionaire outsiders who have a malignant sense of power.  This race should not be bought.

If you feel like I do about these important topics, please make a pledge immediately to Schreibman's campaign here. Or risk a very different Ulster County than the one we now know, one that celebrates nature, quaint, picturesque towns ripe with character, and residents who can experience true freedom and individuality without compromise. HELP!! The Schreibman campaign is up against very DEEP pockets - between Gibson's own campaign, the NRCC (National Republican Congressional Committee) and Crossroads (Karl Roves' group) they are expected to spend almost 4 million on TV when it's all over, the medium that influences NY voters the most. How can we let money win out over our health, our quality of life, and our environment?  This race is about electing the best person for the job.  Forget political parties and think "good government" - a government that works for the people, all the people, as well as the environment.  Don't underestimate what a few people can do, what YOU can do...  Please vote in November and please consider Julian Schreibman for Congress.

WITH GRATITUDE

We often get incredible feedback from our new friends, but I thought I'd shamelessly share a recent lovely gush of appreciation...

"Hi, Ladies! It's Toni L. in Fort Worth, Texas and my little {glass vase} birdies arrived today! I just wanted to thank you so much! Your level of service and communication, even with a little delay in delivery, means so much! I'm just so grateful to do business with people with so much kindness and integrity. I look forward to my next purchase!"

Thanks, Toni! As a small business trying to make a difference in the world, your support means so much to us!

Affect the Physics of Disease

*improve your health

I am excited to let you all know about my dear friend John Newton, who is returning again
to the East Coast for a week of deep, life shifting work. One group session (Saturday March 24th, 7-9pm, $25) and private sessions will be held both at Woodstock Wellness (woodstockwellness.com), and at Nectar (www.nectarimports.com) in a quiet, private space in our Annex. I have known John for more than twenty years, have had extraordinary insights and emotional and spiritual healing in my  own life with and because of John, as well as witnessed profound positive reactions to the (completely booked!) sessions held at my home and Woodstock wellness during his last visit a few months ago.  I'm excited to share the opportunity with you all, trust me, pretty powerful stuff, hence the reason I feel so compelled to help promote this... Keep in mind what he does and how he works defies category and comparison, but he helps to clear emotional and spiritual blocks, and alleviate physical pain. Please excuse the late notice. If interested, book asap as his sessions are filling up! Call John to book your session: 310-663-9966

Since 1987, John has studied healing all over the world: Shamanism in South America, Maori techniques in New Zealand, ancient Kahuna knowledge in Hawaii, meditation from India, Faith Healing in the Philippines, Medical Remote Viewing, Emotional Alchemy, Reiki (Egyptian & Usui), EFT and more.

The mainstay of his practice however, is based on Howard Wills' silent work which can provide results most times in a matter of minutes. John has helped thousands of people with a variety of issues.

And after you've visited our site, be sure to contact us with as much feedback as possible to make it as wonderful as it can be!  For now it is a plunge into everything that is Nectar, without the smells (a virtual scratch and sniff may be forthcoming, who knows! :)) and the music that helps to make this place so alive... Still, it is a visceral experience nonetheless, layers of texture, and some personal Nectar stories thrown in for good measure. Next step, a SHOPPING CART on the site!  Whoo hoo! Please do pass this email on to anyone who might be interested in finding out about all the good things we have going on! Many thanks!

Actualizing our new site has been an exciting co-creation between Rebecca Cobb, our wonderful Graphic Designer, the web programmers over atwww.bistrostudios.com

Nectar's Victoria Walsh Harrison who organized and uploaded images, my dear friend Amy Finkle who tediously, generously re-sized the photos and helped with overall tweaking of the site, and Roy Gumpel and Donna Bunte, who did much of the photography, as well as myself.  I did the great majority of the writing, with some much appreciated relief from Nectar's Cecily Sachi and Garland Middleton.  This site was long overdue. And a final thanks to Nectar's Lindsey Buckley for her contribution to the Blog as well as her exquisite forest photo in the Why Reclaimed? section; just what my eyes were searching for. And finally, thanks to the Green Cottage crew in High Falls for the flowers in my photo above!

Our friends in the Nectar community have been more than patient awaiting our web site's re-birth... Thanks for the tiny pom poms waving around everyone!

"The Flats" by Jenny Wonderling

Neighbors Helping Neighbors...

This image was taken that surreal day just after the hurricane 0n Rte. 299 in New Paltz. Previously a field lush with sunflowers, pumpkins, corn, and more, only weeks away from harvest... Fields of brown and murky water now replace the vivid color.  And the lovely family at Wallkill View Farm (not to mention their wonderful employees) are by far not the only farm hit by the hurricane without the protection of flood insurance.  Less than two weeks later, we were collectively affected by widespread flooding once again. Blessings to all those who have lost... Road blocks and the inconveniences of driving are nothing compared the devastation that so many have endured.  For those of you residing beyond (and within!) Ulster County's borders (and other flood and wind devastated areas), there are some great local organizations involved in the effort of rebuilding for you to get involved. Individuals interested in volunteering or contributing can do so with theAmerican Red Cross or Governor Cuomo's excellent newly launched hands-on initiativeLabor For Your Neighbor

There's also the wonderful Family of Woodstock with its far reaching programswww.familyofwoodstockinc.org

Starting with our kick-off Two Week sale Saturday, September 24th, we will be giving 10% of furniture sales to Labor for Your Neighbor!! So come to Nectar, and feel even better about your purchase! Namaste!

Reclaimed Wood and Our Belief
At Nectar we pride ourselves on sourcing inventory that is Green as well as Fairtrade, so that each purchase has as little environmental impact as possible and/or supports wonderful community projects and cooperatives around the world.   (Not to mention offers our clients items that are full of character and unique!)  Though our furniture items are "Green", they are not Fairtrade, but many (not all) of our gifts and jewelry are.  India has strict deforestation laws and they recycle everything possible.  The main company we buy from has warehouses and yards full of old materials from buildings as well as old furniture that they transform and revive into things unique and beautiful... Nectar likes to keep our two stores fresh and lush with interesting new things.

Liam Skye Update!

And almost last but not least... Hard to believe but Liam will be a year at the end of this month!!! Here he is pictured with a dust pan. Maybe this time one of my sons will actually like to clean! I've decided to start him early. Hah, keep dreaming, Mama, this one likes to make a mess too!  It's a good thing he's sweet as sweet can be. Liam is... taking three steps at a time, cruising holding onto surfaces and hands, loves to dance, to get the mail "MAIL BOX!!", playing in the sandbox at the park, pretend driving in a real car or truck, his BIG brothers and FOOD, yes, he's finally eating real food, PHEW! He says "Aidan, truck, ball, mailbox (with what sounds like a mouth full of marbles), Emmanuel (also open to interpretation),  Mama, Dada, YaYa (one of his best friends) Emma, (another one of his best friends.  Like his father, he likes older women)... Liam's a blessing, and leaves a trail of love and joy... YUM!

 HAPPY SUMMER ADVENTURES!

Dear Jenny,

Did you know that Nectar has more than fifty different styles of journals in stock for adults and even children?  Give your ramblings a beautiful place to live; choose from lined or unlined, spiral bound or wrapped in leather or whimsy, find the perfect journal to record the unfolding summer days ahead.

...It all started with the first sightings of tender green leaves on the trees and the crocus and daffodils
timidly rising from their slumber in the earth. And then it happened-- nature exploding all around us with shameless color and the raucous of birdsong! Aaaah, I sigh, and just in time, for though the winter in the Hudson Valley can be peaceful, it is also long, slushy and gray after a while.  And spring is so quintessentially beautiful here-- something to behold AND TO RECORD!

Those close to me are aware how journaling has long been one of my closest allies.  I once heard the following wise words, "Use everything in your life to create your art."  But whether or not you consider your private musings art or mere catharsis, come to Nectar to find endless slates for inspiration.  Like the journal below, just arrived and entitled FEARLESS...

Blessings for an adventure filled, inspired, and peaceful summer ahead, friends... And happy wedding Nesli and Guthrie!!

For all of you who have come to love our dear friend Neslihan, (affectionately known as "Nesli" to many who knew her at Nectar) my family is so excited to join her and her fiance for their wedding in Turkey! I will come back after two weeks with news from that ancient, extraordinary place, let you know if my teenage boys and baby boy alike found it fun, and do expect some new treasures and mementos from the market to brighten the store! And if you have been to Turkey yourself, please let me know if you have any suggestions for places to stay and enjoy.   We leave June 14th, so email or call me soon! Many thanks!

May abundance and joy be yours!

Fairtrade African Baskets...

Your purchases at Nectar contribute to many wonderful support services for our world neighbors...

We are presently placing our next order of gorgeous furniture from India!  Contact us for special orders or requests.  Architectural salvage including antique doors and columns, all kinds of furniture, and more.   I should complete the order by the 1st week of June, so hurry to get your design wish granted!

Editor's Note

Please write and share your Nectar stories, send photos of purchases (especially furniture!) so friends can see how your items look in your environments, and send suggestions and feedback for our newsletter!

Thanks for helping to make Nectar so luscious! And the world...

Liam Skye Update!

And almost last but not least... Hard to believe but he's just about eight months! Here he is pictured with one of his favorite people, Emma, so of course he's so happy his second chin gets really excited. Liam is now crawling in earnest, none of that belly dragging Spiderman wanna-be stuff anymore.  Yes he's a big boy , pulling himself up on everything because he wants to walk too! His two top teeth have cut through, and he's trying to birth the bottom ones, all while warding off the evils of his first cold.  Well, that's because he had his first make-out session with his older girlfriend Pim (a month his elder, and so extraordinary he forgets he needs to take it slow, even though we've had "the talk" with him already), and his best friend (four hours younger) who was trying to move in on his girl. But that's a long complicated, seemingly inappropriate, and yet entirely innocent story of a day in the life of one small boy filled with wonder...

Goodbye Ganesha! One last word: "Goodbye" to our dear old jolly, enormous mascot who adorned the front of our store so beautifully.  You have gone to a wonderful, loving home, where your gifts of abundance will continue to flow and be appreciated.   Thanks for the reminder of impermanence.   And just wait, Nectar friends, for the new surprise Welcoming Committee! See you soon!

Some Things Old,
Some Things New...
Our Latest Container of Treasures Arrives This Friday!

Dear Jenny,

Are you as excited as we are at Nectar to peruse our new inventory!?  Friday January 7th, we will be unloading the truck and unearthing treasures. This weekend the stores may be a bit turned upside down, but who doesn't love a bit of healthy chaos!? Be the first to explore...
Our long awaited container from India brings all sorts of beauty-- from antique hutches and other items, to fine camel bone inlay side tables, consoles, dressers, and mirrors, as well as interesting new designs including industrial wood and metal furniture, bookshelves and more!  You'll just have to see for yourself...

Gratitude
Thanks for supporting Nectar this past holiday season, as well as Family of Woodstock

Through your purchases between December 6th and 19th, though we haven't quite got the final tally on what the exact number is, it will make a much needed dent in various support services Family offers. That number soon to come!  (Apologies, friends, my three month old baby adds a new dimension to my previous concept of "overload"!)  Nectar understands you have a choice in where you shop, especially now when most have little to spend frivolously.  We try our hardest to make your shopping experience an inspired one. Please share any ideas or feedback with us about how to make Nectar even better... And don't forget to check out: www.familyofwoodstockinc.org and give when you can to their much needed local programs to neighbors in need...

In Kerela, India

In Kerela, India

Trips to source new inventory should never be "all work and no play!" This photo was taken moments after a super fun game of Duck Duck Goose in Allepey, Kerela! Who knows, those kids might still be playing it, along with Red Light Green Light, two small offerings from Nectar's Jenny and Karsten. (She says,"Nothing compared to the gift of spending the afternoon with these children.  India's kids, though living in a kind of squalor few Americans know, have an extraordinary joy.  My husband's and my experience there was that Indians are an incredibly generous people, no matter how little they have...)
